Introducing Veiled Glory

Thank you for visiting Weekend Kindness-- the blog that helps you build positive relationships! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed so that you don't miss a single post from one of our great authors!

Welcome, everyone, to Weekend Kindness! I am honored to collaborate on this blog and hope to bring helpful, solid advice and ideas to the table.

My name is Anna and I maintain Veiled Glory blog and site that serve the burgeoning head-covering and modestly-clothed Christian women’s community. So many women are earnestly trying to figure out what it means to show their faith through the way they dress. I share about my path towards covering my hair in accordance with 1 Corinthians 11 and dressing modestly in the sometimes less than friendly environment of Academia, where I work and attend classes.

I have been married for just over one year to Jeff, a soon to be certified computer geek. We have one spoiled cat and no children…yet.

MintheGap asked me to join Weekend Kindness to serve as the Newlywed perspective, because older marrieds may have forgotten what this stage in life is like. Jeff and I came from Christian homes but had to find the faith on our own after several years of prodigal living before we were married. We know what the World has to offer and said, “No Way!” and each committed ourselves to waiting for God’s timing in courtship. Our favorite saying, when it comes to our marriage is: “It just keeps getting better!”

And my prayer is that your marriage will keep getting better, too.

Anna runs the Veiled Glory blog which focuses on the issues of modesty and head covering for Christian women. She is a newlywed, an excuse she uses for nearly everything sweet and cute done in public with her husband. They love to go hiking, read to each other, and eat great home-cooked meals. Anna works at a university library and hopes to become a full-time homemaker in the near future.

An Invitation to Linger

“Tea was once reserved for the upper classes who had time on their hands. Nowadays, it’s the opposite. We’re so busy that we take tea to escape from the pressure and the fast pace, especially when someone invites, ‘Oh, do come for tea…’ Now, you have an excuse to linger.” ~Gail Greco

When I named my web log Home-steeped Hope, I envisioned two women chatting, seated around a humble kitchen table. Maybe they’d just prayed together or completed a simple study, because a Bible lay open before them. Now, however, their hands cradled steaming mugs and whether sipping on coffee or tea, or sharing joys or heartaches—with a treasured friend, there’s no better way of cultivating hope. Especially when you have the Lord in common.

My name is Mary Allen. By now you realize I’m a Christian…who loves any excuse to linger… I’m fourteen years happily married to my handsome cowboy, and a stay at home, homeschooling mother of three girls—9, 7 (today!) and 3 years of age. With a never-finished list of projects, I’m always wishing for more time to build up the relationships I cherish.

Our modest little home is nestled into a hillside embedded with limestone rocks and trees, and dotted with barns. We raise horses, goats, red and white border collies, and the occasional bucket calf. Our little corner of mid-western heaven is a constant work-in-progress, one that teaches me something new every year!

We’re blessed to be surrounded by both of our extended families, and attend a community Bible church thirty miles from home. I’ve been adapting to the new role—to me—of Education Director, and have a whole new appreciation for the work behind the programs our church offers, from Sunday School to AWANA to family camp…I’m also learning there is no better relationship builder between believers than working together for a common goal. But it’s a delicate balancing act, juggling family and church responsibilities.

I look forward to “lingering” here, to discovering together those small daily differences we each can make. So often, it’s the simple things which enrich our relationships, and feed hope to our souls.

Thank you, MInTheGap, for inviting me to be a part of the Weekend Kindness team.

An Introduction Is in Order

Hi! I’m Revka, and MIn the Gap asked me to join Weekend Kindness as an author. It is only polite that you should know a bit about the person who writes the articles you read.

When I meet new people, one of the first questions they normally ask is how to pronounce my name. It is said with a long e (Reev-kuh) and is Hebrew for Rebekah. More common Israeli spellings are Rivkah or Rifka. My parents liked the name but, apparently, didn’t know the “correct” spelling.

I am a born-again believer in Christ; in fact, after putting my faith in a profession rather than in the Person of Christ for 19 years, I finally came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ on July 18, 2007. (You can read my full testimony over at my personal blog, The Porch Light.)

I am married to a wonderful man (I refer to him as Mr. Incredible in my blogs), and we will be celebrating our 8th anniversary in a couple of weeks. I love being married to this incredibly patient man, and I love our three daughters, also known as Pookie Bear, Miss Muffet, and Baby Bear.

I believe that there is always room for improvement in my life and am always striving to become more like Christ, which will also make me a better person. I am excited about sharing with you my ideas for building relationships and treating our families with kindness. As you will see in my first (non-introductory) post, I plan to be transparent in my posts, honestly detailing my own struggles and triumphs as is appropriate to the topic at hand, though not every post will be about me. I hope that you will find my posts relevant, encouraging, and useful, and I look forward to getting to know you readers better.

Thanks, MIn the Gap, for giving me this opportunity.

Who Is MInTheGap?

I figure since it’s time for introductions, and I don’t believe that I’ve formally introduced myself anywhere, that I should go first.  So, here’s me in a nutshell.

I was born and raised in a truly unique household.  Until last year, I have had all four grandparents alive.  Both sets had reached over 50 years of marriage– same person the whole time.  My parents have been married 32 years.  I have two brothers and a sister, all younger.

I’ve been married 6 years to Virtuous Blonde, our wedding was on July 7, 2001.  We have three children.

I’m a Bob Jones University grad with a major in Computer Science and a minor in music (I play piano and sing).  I returned home after finishing my degree, but moved when I got married to a house near my place of employment.

Why do you want to write about building relationships?  Because the more I have read the more I see that there is a need for encouragement for couples in marriages.  There’s a lot of pressures internally and externally, and in our fast paced world we need help to keep our relationships strong.

Any other questions?  Just ask!
