In college, we had a yearly event called a dating outing.  It was a time when my society got a chance to put on an event—either formal, at a park, etc—where the guys could invite girls to do something a little out of the ordinary.

One year we were at Paris Mountain and I was in charge of making a scavenger hunt for three different groups.  The idea was that they would go from place to place looking for clues that would get them to an end goal.  The cute part was that the three guys that were planning it sent their dates a clue that had to be read at one point in time.

A Night on the Town

Bride by the Sunrise

One of the things that I really enjoyed at my college was the dramatic arts there.  We were really spoiled in that we had Vespers—almost every other Sunday performance of drama, music, and readings—speech contests, Operas, Shakespearean theater, and small plays that we could attend.

Most of the time these were big events.  Guys would get out their best suits or rent a tux.  Girls would get out the equivalent of prom gowns.  They would get gifts of flowers and candy for each other, and they would get to escort each other to the place where the production was to take place and enjoy the night together.

Plan an Extended Trip

Bride by the Sunrise

Vacations can be lots of fun—but what usually happens is that you need a vacation to recover from the vacation.

There’s all these things that are stacked against you:

  • The long car/plane trips
  • The unfamiliar beds
  • The late nights
  • The early mornings
  • The whiny kids

The Great Outdoors

Bride by the Sunrise

My wife likes to camp.  I’d only been camping once in my life.  And that was in a POP-up camper.  And it was hot.  And I thought I never wanted to do it again.

A couple years ago we went camping with tents out to a place that had a beach where you could see the sun set over the water.  It was amazing.

It’s been some time since then, but we still have the desire to get back out again.

Diamonds are Forever

Bride by the Sunrise

Back before I even dated my wife, I knew the power of fine jewelry.  My brother and I, knowing that it was my mom’s birthday, decided we were going to get her something—and we had to do it fast because we were downtown and were going to be leaving soon.

So, we went into the local store, and started looking around to see if we could find something that we thought that my mom would want.

Then we spotted what we thought was the perfect thing.

Make a Splash

Bride by the Sunrise One of the things that I’ve been mulling over during the past few months is that when we were dating our spouses we did a whole lot more (it seems) to attempt to win their heart than we do after we’re married.

Sure, we now have excuses:

  • We’re too tired.
  • There’s too much to do.
  • I’ve already won her heart!
  • We have kids now.
  • She doesn’t want to do anything.
