It’s funny.  If you sit down and do the math, we’re supposed to get 7 hours of sleep a night.  That’s 49 hours of sleep a week, roughly 210 hours of sleep a month, and 2,555 hours of sleep a year.

We spend 29% of our time sleeping—and most of that on a mattress, but when we go to buy a mattress we try to save as much money as we can.

We’re laying on that mattress longer than we’re in our car (for most people) and yet we skimp here.  We’re probably not playing our Wii as long as we’re sleeping, and yet we’ll go all out… well, I think you’ve got the hint.

We purchased our Mattress and box spring back when we were married in 2001.  We didn’t know much about Mattresses, except for their price.  And back then, we were trying to save money.

Seven years and multiple flips of the Mattress later, and it’s time to start looking into getting something new—something fresh.  And technology has changed.

That’s why, this past Friday while my wife and son were in with the witchdoctor Chiropractor, my other children and I went next store to a mattress place and started to ask some questions.

There are so many options now, from foam to latex, from big springs to little, from air to water to foam!  How to find what’s best, and how to balance the cost and feeling?

What kind of mattress do you sleep on?  Do you like it?

This article is very true, Now I will not save my money on buying mattresses..

My husband has scoliosis, so we’ve never had the option of buying a cheap mattress. He has to have maximum support for his back. We were very fortunate in that my parents got us a set of mattresses as a Christmas present last year, since they knew we would have a hard time affording the kind of mattress he needed.

I’ll have to check what kind we have when I get home tonight!

@Misa: Sorry about that– you should make sure you’re comfortable.

@Rachel: Well, I’m definitely going for something more expensive this next time. I’m going to make sure my wife tries a few out first.

A lot of places have 30 day trial periods - maybe you could test out a few for several days before committing to a final purchase since this is such a big investment.

@Rachel: There are places that will– and part of that (I believe) is because they know most people won’t return them.

Funny you should ask! We will be shopping for a new mattress this weekend. We’ve been sleeping in the guest room to try to find out if our aches and pains are from our Tempurpedic (can I use brand names here?) mattress or just from getting older.

My husband thinks the mattress is to blame, but I’m just as sore as ever after two weeks in the guest room.

Will let you know what we end up with. We pretty much have to buy this weekend because we have guests coming in about 10 days, and they’ll need a place to sleep.
