What do you use to keep your family and your house safe?

A few years back, my family and I went out to visit my inlaws and when we had returned we left the doors to our car unlocked.  The next time we got into the car we found that someone had gotten inside, stole the in-dash CD player as well as a whole wallet of CDs.

I don’t consider my house to be in that much of an unsafe neighborhood, but I’d be lying if I didn’t think that, when we were leaving for this last trip, that I should do something to keep my computer safe in case someone came in.  I mean, I have irreplaceable photos on it!

We live in a world where safety is not guaranteed, and yet many will go to extreme levels to protect earthly possessions.  Some will get different brands of Home Security Systems that will monitor their houses.  These Security Systems allow for a reduction in your home owner’s insurance, and in that they’re not all bad, and they will monitor for floods.

But I’m interested, what how much Home Security do you think is too much?  Does it really depend on the location, and how much do you think the news and what  we now know happens via the media play a part on how secure you keep yourself and how secure you you believe you are?

    Good questions.

We live on the school campus, so we feel very secure. I can tell you I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in this city other than here!

In our old town, we lived in a very safe neighborhood and never got an alarm system. I wouldn’t be worried about it so much for possessions (just stuff; can be replaced) but I would like it to know if there was an intruder when I’m home alone with our daughter. I like the idea of protection for lives.

@Rachel: I mean, on one level we should be able to trust the Lord for protection. My brother takes this to extremes and doesn’t lock his house when he leaves or his car. I think he’s silly.

Jim Elliot didn’t get life insurance because He figured God would protect Him.

In the same case, God puts responsibility on us to provide, even when He says He will provide. I think a good argument could be made to keep yourself safe– within reason.
