Plan a Scavenger Hunt

In college, we had a yearly event called a dating outing.  It was a time when my society got a chance to put on an event—either formal, at a park, etc—where the guys could invite girls to do something a little out of the ordinary.

One year we were at Paris Mountain and I was in charge of making a scavenger hunt for three different groups.  The idea was that they would go from place to place looking for clues that would get them to an end goal.  The cute part was that the three guys that were planning it sent their dates a clue that had to be read at one point in time.

Preparation

The reason that I’ve not been able to pull this off is that I’ve not been able to do the prep work that would be necessary to pull this off.  But if you’re ready to try this challenge, make sure you have some time to plan.

Simply put, you’re going to want to have a series of stops that you want her to make, and in order to do this you’re going to have to make sure that there’s someone or something there to be the next clue.

Childcare

Make sure that you’ve arranged for appropriate childcare when necessary.  The last thing that you want her to have to worry about is, “He’s doing this for me, but where am I going to find a babysitter!”

Clues

Here’s where you’re afforded some degree of creativity.  Be a poet and hide the destination in the poem.  Be forthright and tell her where to go.  Have the backside of the clue be part of the final destination—sort of a puzzle.

However you want to manage the clues, make sure that it’s pretty clear where she’s supposed to go next.  You don’t want her frustrated!

Destinations

You can take her anywhere, but what will leave the most lasting impact is if you have her get things when she gets there.

  • Arrange for her to go to a place for a massage, and have the massage paid for when she arrives.
  • Have her go to a florists, and have a bouquet waiting for her.
  • Have her go to a department store and leave her a card for her to find and buy clothes.

You can choose to meet up with her for certain events, or not have her find you until the end, your choice.

Destination Setup

Once you’ve picked the places that she is going, make sure to pay a visit—almost right ahead of her—to make sure things are going well.  The last thing you want is for a clue to be thrown out or lost.

If you have a person give her the clue, make sure that they are there when she’s going to be coming—and not going on break.  Another solution would be to get a friend of family member to be the person they look for or to help you with the clues.

Final Goal

Make sure the end of the trail is something that is worth the whole thing.  Whether it’s a night in a hotel or something that she’d really love.  You’ve probably been building throughout the day, so you’ll want to make the end worth it.

This will be something that she will remember for a long time, so take the time to prepare and then watch and have fun.

Now this is just mean. When your readership is mostly women, how can you continue to dangle tantalizing dreams like this before our eyes??? We can’t just go suggesting our dh’s start reading this blog (especially when they are barely internet literate as it is!!)

Seriously, if you pull this off, your wife is going to be the envy of all women. What a sweet, one of a kind dh you are!

This has been a SUPER fun series, btw!

@Mary: How do you know my readership is mostly women? I mean, just because it’s only women that comment (for the most part)… hmm. Not going to win this one, am I?

Perhaps, if more women got their husbands to read this blog, it would grow. Then again, Rachel said that she was going to actually print out a post from this site and put it in her hubby’s Greek book.

In any case, you’ll have to stick around to see how I wrap it up Friday.

And you’re right, the side benefit of writing this series is accountability. How can I write it and not follow through?!
