Vacations can be lots of fun—but what usually happens is that you need a vacation to recover from the vacation.

There’s all these things that are stacked against you:

  • The long car/plane trips
  • The unfamiliar beds
  • The late nights
  • The early mornings
  • The whiny kids

For the family with children—especially small children—vacations can become “having the same stresses we have around our house, without the comforts of our house.”  You know what I mean, you’ve tried it.  What you truly need is some time that you can spend away from them to get to know your spouse better and so that you can better parent them.

The thing is, there are very few people that you probably trust to watch your children for one night, let alone multiple nights.  And then there are the children.  How would they respond to Mom and Dad being gone for multiple days?

The best thing to do is to plan to have an extended trip some time in the future, and then start building up to it.  Have some weekends where you spend the night away, or have them go to a relatives’ house.

From there, work your way up to a longer vacation.

I’m not saying you don’t love your children.  I’m not saying that you should spend as much time away from them as possible.

What I am saying is that you need some time with your spouse, alone, if for nothing else than the chance to sleep in!

Word. We do need time away from the kiddos.

We’re actually getting a night away this weekend. We have to go over to the Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday so I can train some church workers on a financial records program, and then my hubby is preaching there the next morning. The pastor offered to put us up in a hotel for one night - how could we refuse? There’s not much left post-Katrina (this particular city was completely washed away) but it will still be fun to be away and together.

@Rachel: I was wondering about Katrina and also Faye. But I guess Faye is mostly Florida.

Glad to hear he’s getting some preaching time in. Does he get to do this a lot?

Actually, he does get to fill in quite a bit. When my uncle travels for seminars & counseling schools, he asks my hubby to fill in in the pulpit. My hubby’s grandfather is a pastor up in the Baton Rouge area and usually asks my hubby to preach 2-3 times a year there. Also any time we go home to the church we were in before we moved, the pastor there usually asks him to preach that Sunday. This particular church in MS invited my hubby to come after hearing a CD of one of his previous messages from our church.

@Rachel: I was the guest preacher in my home church while the Pastor was out on vacation, and I fill in from time to time in a smaller church in our area. I think I’ve preached in 3 or 4 different venues.

I’ve started to think/pray through the ministry and whether God would want me to do more ministry type work (preaching/writing/etc) than what I’m doing now.
