‘Tis the season to almost freeze to death carrying a once alive tree up a steep hill in below freezing weather to stuff it in your van after almost giving your dad a heart-attack and then to get it home and have it drop pine needles everywhere!
That was our adventure this past Saturday as we took our two oldest (almost 5, 3) out with my father to get a tree. We had to find one that was really far away, and this one Christmas tree farm that we went to has a steep hill between where you park your car and the trees.
We went back to this one after using the “full-service” Christmas tree farm two years ago because we had too much fun with the last one. Cold weather, ride on a wagon, picked the tree, wrapped it, covered in snow, snow and wet all over the living room, and then– three days later– spiders everywhere. Gives me the shivers just remembering it.
So, we went to the place that we went to before the “full-service” place and boy was it cold. And when you’re breathing hard, cold air just makes it worse.
But now, it’s in our home, we’ve put lights on it, and the kids help us put up the decorations. Well, the older two did. The youngest is terrified of it. I’m thinking that this is a good thing while it lasts. We have a good chance, this way, of it staying up or things staying on it.
Do you do real trees, or have any other tree traditions in your home?

I love real trees, but unfortunately they are just so expensive lately. Stockings were always huge, and luckily SR had the same tradition growing up. We also were allowed to open one gift on Christmas eve, which we’ll probably do this year too. Other traditions include lots of good food and family!

We did stockings growing up as well, only when we got married our parents wanted to keep our stockings! My wife and I want to get coordinated ones, so we’ll see.
We also did the “open one gift Christmas Eve” but it was usually something from someone that wasn’t there. (Grandparents that were far away.) This year we’ll probably be down at my parents for Christmas Eve and we’re going to do Christmas day entirely at our house for the first time.
