Rushing to the ER

The Bible promises that God never gives us more than we can handle.  These past few weeks have been a test of that principle.

A couple weeks back, I told you all about how we had to rush up to a bigger hospital because doctors believed that my oldest son might have a mal-rotated intestine.

Last night, it was my middle son.

Two nights ago, when he was going to sleep, I heard that he was a bit congested, and tried to make him comfortable.  He woke up the following morning and he sounded like he was getting croup, so I gave him a nebulizer treatment in 5:00 AM.

We gave him treatments throughout the day at the regular intervals and he was fine, except for breathing in.  I went to Patch the Pirate with his older brother, and we planned on giving our second child another breathing treatment before we went to bed.  That’s when things took a turn toward the crazy side.

I went downstairs to get the laundry and my wife went to check on him.  I heard her scream, and she came running at me.  He was blue, eyes rolled back in his head, and was not responsive.  When we got him outside– it wasn’t the cold– it didn’t help.  He was having a hard time breathing, and my wife was believing that we were going to lose him.  We had called 911 and the fire-trucks and ambulances were on their way.

The called it croup as they came and gave him a breathing treatment (ephinedrine) in the ambulance and they rushed off to the hospital, right around the corner.  I got a hold of the family, and had the pastor’s wife on the way to our house.  In the meantime, the neighbor across the street shows up (we hardly know them) and asks if she can sit with the kids until whoever comes and I can go to the hospital.  So I left my two kids with complete stranger…

In any case, we got over there, and he was still having trouble breathing.  To make a long story shorter, they ended up giving him another treatment and some steroids, and around 4:30 am the next morning my father and I brought him home.

Now, what happened when I got home is yet another story.  But I am thankful for the kindness of our Pastor’s wife, of the neighbor that we now have a reason to get to know, and for my family to come when our son was in need.
