It seems like it happens every time the weather changes.  It starts as a cough, and moves into the chest, the ears, and just about every muscle in our bodies begins to ache.  Laying down doesn’t even seem to make it all right.

And it’s not content just staying in one family member– its cruel fingers soon touch every member of the family in time.  All get it to varying degrees, and it’s up to the one parent that is “less sick” or “not sick” to take care of all the rest.  And then, throw in a small child on the mend who now has an enormous source of energy and you have a very difficult situation.

What is sickness like in your house?  In mine, if it’s a head cold, I often find myself with whomever is sick on the couch with a TV series on DVD.  For me, not them (usually).  I have to keep them propped up on my chest to help them breath, and help my wife get some sleep.  Then she does the reverse for me– if she’s feeling well.

If she’s not feeling well, that makes it more difficult.  You see, we live in a small house, and that means you can hear everything that’s going on around you–  this makes sleeping a challenge.  Unfortunately, this usually means more television than normal– since it’s one of the few things that we can actually do that keeps people quiet.

Anyone have other combat stories, or other solutions that might work?

You know, we had a sick bout right after we’d committed to the no TV procedure, and thankfully, we’d just gone to the library and were stocked up with great books. Also, my mom’s aunt had given us a stack of coloring books and new colors/markers. Toddler had never colored so much in her life. And even though she was half-sick (no fever) she didn’t ask for movies or TV.

I’d certainly never fault any parent for putting in a video for their sick child. Anything to distract them from their misery. Glad yours are feeling better, or at least, I assume they are by now!
