Hey kids! There’s a new meme on the block… Weekend Kindness. I really like the sound of it. Every weekend, we’re to get an assignment of kindness, to be completed over the weekend and blogged about by Monday. I think it has tremendous potential to send out ripples of love and kindness through this tired and hurting world of ours. This week, to start off, we were asked to blog about an act of kindness that we received which touched us personally.
Well. For me personally, that’s like trying to pinpoint a breath of air that kept me alive better than any other.
I am blessed beyond all understanding. I have two of the single best parents in the world. I have siblings I adore like nothing else, aunts and cousins, grandparents living and dearly departed who still shape my life and my heart. I have a husband who has stayed by me against all odds - even when I have tried my best to leave him. Along with this family, I have also had friends and neighbours who make me wonder how I have gotten to 30+ years having met so few difficult or hurtful people. Almost everyone I have known has been kind to me. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that kindness has showered me throughout my entire life. Kindness has sweetened nearly every meal I’ve eaten. Who among us can say this has been the case? But we are to write about one kindness that has touched us deeply, so I will.
The kindness Christ showed me when he took the punishment for every evil thing I would ever do is the kindness that changed and continues to change me irrevocably. That God would forgive me, would provide this redemption for me before I even physically existed, is life-altering knowledge. You can’t be the same after really realizing this. This first act of kindness has made it possible for us to be kind to one another.
So, with this meme and God’s help, let’s make “paying it forward” a regular part of our lives!
I’ll leave you with a snippet from one of my favourite songs from Music Machine, a musical play I performed in when I was just seven years old… “Kindness”. The words have stayed with me ever since.
Isn’t God good
When He asks us
Just to love like He does?Isn’t God good
When He asks us
Just to be so kind?
